Fort Worth Personal Trainers: Monday Quick Tip-The Psychology of Thinking vs. Doing (VIDEO)
“There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction.”
-John F. Kennedy
Today I wanted to share an article called The Psychology of Thinking vs. Doing by
Thomas Oppong
I was reminded last week of the absolute necessity of taking action during a conversation with a new client last week.
The gentleman a very successful businessman in his 50’s stopped in the middle of the consult and said…
“I’m sorry if I’m talking a lot, doing this has been on my mind the last couple of years. And now I’m finally here!”
And I thought if this man who has mentally conditioned himself to take action his goals (probably since his early teens) can get stuck “Thinking about” getting in shape…
It can (and does!) happen to any and all of us at some time.
So I wanted to share this excellent article The Psychology of Thinking Vs. Doing.
The author breaks it down into 4 major points.
1) 2 Systems
Doing-Is carrying out a series of tasks
Thinking-Is reflecting on what tasks should be carried out.
With respect to goals, projects, and other to-do items, it’s east to get stuck too long in the thinking and planning phase.
And this reinforces the NOT taking action habit.
When in reality taking ONE action outweighs all the benefits of “thinking about it”.
2) It’s What You Do that Defines You
Being a does instead of a Thinker requires an insane amount of discipline and commitment-IN THE BEGINNING.
Doing involves risk but it’s the only way to make progress.
And when you take action it reinforces that taking action habit.
Making it EASIER to take positive actions toward your goals in the future.
3) Embrace the Action Habit.
“Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned”
Peter Marshall
Actions you take beat life-changing intentions.
NOT doing anything is the same as intending to do something and not ever doing it.
And research has founds that-“Thinking about doing is more exhausting than doing”
Incremental progress is better than big ideas.
4) What You DO Matters!
“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”
Dale Carnegie
