Fort Worth Personal Training: The “Grandma” Question and WHY It’s SO Very Important to Your Results
Resistance is always lying and always full of shit.”
― Steven Pressfield, The War of Art
I work with A LOT of clients that have never worked out or are just getting back in from a loooooong layoff from the gym.
Most of my clients have an initial goal of losing 20-50 pounds, toning up, and feeling better.
They either don’t know how to get there on their own.
Or they know what to do but, can’t keep themselves going long enough to see results.
No matter what category you’re in, nothing will get you those results faster than a…(say it with me)
Consistent workout program
For my beginning clients the exercise habit just isn’t there, and the consistency is what we’re really working on.
By that I mean…
People think the exercise is the important thing.
It’s actually not.
It’s the “Showing up” habit that is MOST important.
In fact it’s MORE IMPORTANT than all the other habits combined.
Because without IT, you’ll never get those other habits and the results that come with them.
So that’s what I’m in fact, really helping clients do in the first few weeks and months is to develop the “showing up” habit.
And any time you’re trying to make positive improvements in your life you’re going to meet resistance.
This is why one of my go-to questions I like to ask a client after they’ve gotten started is
“How’s your grandmother doing?”
And I do usually get the odd look, or “Why, does it matter?”
I say…absolutely!
“Nothing is more dangerous to your Grandmothers health than you starting a new workout program.”
At least one new client a month will run up against….RESISTANCE
“Grandma passed away, I’ve got to miss training for the next day (week, month, year, whatever) for the funeral”
“Grandma is on dialysis I’ve got to miss training for the next day (week, month, year, whatever) to take her there”
Grandma fell down the stairs I’ve got to miss training for the next day(week, month, year, whatever) to take her to bingo”
Whether true or not…
“Grandma” is just an example of them RESISTANCE you’ll ALWAYS encounter mwhen trying to change your habits for the better, like when you’re getting back in shape.
It’s like a test from the universe to see how bad you really want it.
It’s JUST PART OF THE GAME.
Cars will break down.
Training partners will flake.
Friends will sabotage you.
Your boyfriend will break up with you.
You’ll step off a curb and break your ankle.
Your job will change hours.
Happy hours will be dangled in front of you as a distraction.
Expect RESISTANCE!
You MUST ignore it. Move forward.
And show up ANYWAY.
Remember this.
