“Resistance is always lying and always full of shit.”
― Steven Pressfield, The War of Art
I work with A LOT of clients that have never worked out or are just getting back in from a long layoff from the gym.
Most of my clients have an initial goal of losing 20-50 pounds, toning up, and feeling better.
And nothing will get you those results faster than a consistent workout program.
For my beginning clients the exercise habit just isn’t there, and the consistency is what we’re really working on.
By that I mean people think the exercise is the important thing.
It’s actually not.
It’s the “Showing up” habit that is MOST important.
So that’s what I’m helping clients do in the first few weeks and months is develop the “showing up” habit.
And any time you’re trying to make positive improvements in your life you’re going to meet resistance.
So one of the questions I like to ask a new client is “How’s your grandmother doing?”
And I do usually get the odd look, or “Why, does it matter?”
I tell them…absolutely!
Nothing is more dangerous to your Grandmothers health than you starting a new workout program.
At least one new client a month will run up against….
“Grandma passed away, I’ve got to miss training for the next day (week, month, year, whatever) for the funeral”
“Grandma is on dialysis I’ve got to miss training for the next day (week, month, year, whatever) to take her there”
Grandma fell down the stairs. I’ve got to miss training for the next day(week, month, year, whatever) to take her to bingo”
Whether true or not Grandma is just an example of the resistance you’ll ALWAYS encounter when trying to change your habits for the better, like when you’re getting back in shape.
It’s like a test from the universe
to see how bad you really want it.
It’s JUST PART OF THE GAME.
Cars will break down.
Training partners will flake.
Friends will sabotage you.
Your boyfriend will break up with you.
You’ll step off a curb and break your ankle.
Your job will change hours.
Happy hours will be dangled in front of you as a distraction.
Expect RESISTANCE!
You MUST ignore it. Move forward.
And show up ANYWAY.
Remember this.
